Speaking with Spirits

What can we learn from embracing the Spirit World?

Fortune-tellers, psychics, witches - whatever you know them as, you’ve definitely heard of them, yet you probably don’t know much about them.

If you look at TikTok however, the social media platform most popular with ‘Gen Z’, you will find that the hashtags “spirituality” and “spiritual”  have 7.5 billion and 5.7 billion views respectively, while “psychic” has 2.8 billion.

This suggests that interest in all things psychic or spiritual is currently high, at least among younger demographics.

To help us mere mortals understand the practice better, three mediums spoke about what they do, what it’s like to be a medium and how it impacts their lives.

Before we explore that though, it will be useful to outline some of the key concepts within this sphere.

What is the Spirit World?

There is no formal definition of the Spirit World as spirituality is not an organised religion. However, the general principles tend to constitute:
-A belief in reincarnation and multiple lives
-A belief that the spirit world exists all around us on a different plane
-A belief that we are all connected through this

What is a medium?

A medium is someone, with psychic 'gifts' or abilities, who is able to receive messages from spirits (someone who has passed). They tend to receive these messages through their senses and then interpret them. They can connect with spirits for themselves or on someone's behalf.

How do mediums interact with spirits?

Clairvoyance - clear seeing

This is when someone is able to receive messages from the Spirit World through images, visions or visuals. They see the images in their mind's eye, not externally.

Clairaudience- clear hearing

This is when someone hears sounds, words or music in their mind's voice.

Clairsentience - clear feeling

This is when someone 'just knows' something, like when we have an intuitive gut feeling. This gift is common in highly sensitive people or empaths.

Clairalience - clear smelling

This is the ability to smell odours or aromas that appear to have no physical source. This could be smelling the smell of a deceased relative's perfume as a sign their spirit is present.

Clairgustance - clear tasting

This is the ability to taste something that is not actually there. As with clairalience, this is often understood to be a sign from spirits, attempting to communicate their presence or remind someone of a specific memory.

Claircognizance - clear knowing

This is when someone has knowledge of people or events that they have no way of knowing. For example, this could be a premonition that something bad is going to happen.

Hannah - working medium

Hannah Macintyre is an evidential medium and also teaches others how to develop their own psychic abilities. She has been involved in spirituality for over a decade, first as a student and now as a working medium and teacher. Hannah got into mediumship through joining a spiritual development circle.

She said: “I just honestly went to my first group not because I thought I was gifted, not because I thought I was special,  and I still don’t, but I thought it would be interesting.

“It was never something I thought that I would be able to do. To find out that it was something available to everybody and you have to work at it, was kind of mind blowing to me.”

Describing herself as ‘clinical about it’, Hannah has always questioned widely-held beliefs around the Spirit World and believes healthy scepticism is a good thing.

"There is a common misconception that if you go for a psychic reading, the medium will tell you exactly what is going to happen to you and when, as if you were a passive agent in your life," Hannah said.

She disagrees with this and stressed the fact that we always have choice. She said: “When someone comes for a reading, it’s like you get a snapshot of their energy in that moment, and the energy surrounding them.

“You can open them up to things, and you can say, ‘I feel all this potential for you here, I know what you can do.’ But then it’s the client’s choice whether they do create the space for that to come in or not.”

On a personal level, working with spirits has been ‘life-affirming’ for Hannah. She now believes in the continued existence of the human spirit.

“I once did a connection with somebody who was killed by a brick falling off scaffolding on the street. It just shows you how quickly it could all change,” she said. “I’m not afraid to live because I’m not afraid of dying.”

Much like the principles of meditation and mindfulness, connecting with the Spirit World can help to cultivate awareness and compassion.

Hannah claimed: “There’s no judgment from spirit. There’s nothing other than love, so you might as well choose happiness and stop punishing yourself for what has been long forgotten.

“We are all guided and loved, they never get annoyed, they never need a break, they never leave us behind.”

She summarised it succinctly: “If I could boil down every card reading I have ever given , it would be the Spirit World believes in you, forgive yourself, choose what you want.”

Tracey - spiritual shop owner

Tracey Pretty is the owner of Twickenham’s biggest spiritual shop, The Hare and The Moon. She does daily spiritual practices including praying to her spirit guides, tarot cards and meditation.

Although she feels she has always been a spiritual person, she began daily practices shortly after opening her shop, which was originally a gift shop.

Tracey said: “I was very sensitive to people and took on their emotions as my own. I could get a vibe off of someone walking into my shop, if they were angry or they were sad. I found that a lot of people were opening up to me almost like a councillor.

“I quickly found that I was becoming very drained as a person. Very anxious, stressed, tired.”

After a process of playing around with different techniques, Tracey reported that her symptoms significantly improved mainly due to a new sense of support and love she felt from her work with spirits.

“We constantly seek love and run away from fear and it’s a difficult world that we live in. Knowing that you are not alone and that you are supported, loved and protected is a huge help as a human.

“I have massive ego wobbles and lack of self-worth and then I remind myself from my practices, that we are all born equal and we are all capable of the same things and I find that hugely comforting."

Tracey believes that a spiritual journey is one of finding answers and wholeheartedly subscribes to the idea that we experience many lifetimes and we are all born equal each time.

“For me it feels very much like a journey of remembering. My belief is that this isn't my first time on this planet. My soul has had many life times. I’m picking up a process which has been learnt through many of my soul’s experiences. And I am remembering things that I learnt in my past life.”

She explained that to access her intuition, the portal through which she can reach the Spirit World, she needs to have a clear mind.

“The first thing you have to do is really trust your intuition and quiet down your ego,” she said. “Our minds natter a lot and the overthinking and our egos can cloud the messages you are getting or the intuition that you’re following.  My practice was helped by meditating and quietening my mind.”

Tracey told a story about a spirit in her shop she named Meredith.

“In the shop our incense smoke dances around and makes these beautiful shapes. One quiet day I was watching the smoke and it just came to me that there was a spirit making it dance. It was a feeling that she, and it was a she, was moving the smoke to cheer me up.

“I didn't see her and I didn't hear her, but I intuitively felt her. And so every morning I would come in and say ‘Morning Meredith, how are you?’, and things would fall off shelves, or she would leave little signs for me.”

Tracey believes it is through synchronicities like this that we can communicate with the other realm.

She hypothesised: “If a thought pops into your head or your heart from nowhere, is that a thought or is that some guides telling you something? If you see a feather, a penny, keep seeing the same numbers, is that a coincidence? Or is that a synchronicity of a guide telling you something?”

Molly - clairvoyant

As a child, Molly Bean-Harding lived in an old Tudor cottage where she said she frequently saw spiritual activity. She remembers having conversations with a young boy who was present there.

As well as being a spiritual person, Molly could be described as clairvoyant.

During lockdown she claimed to receive visual messages or images from loved ones who have passed through her third eye, or mind’s eye. She described these experiences as both healing and comforting.

“It’s like I am tapping into a beautiful, golden energy which is healing me as it passes through. It brings a great sense of comfort that we are all connected and life goes on. We don’t end.”

In her view, we are living one life to the next, each with its own set of lessons to learn.

“I love to come across people who may be sceptic as I can understand their views, but I always feel drawn to help them see that they are part of a much bigger picture, we are merely a blink in time,” she said.

Molly also believes that we are all guided by spirits and are never alone.

“Throughout childhood, our ‘light’ is slowly made dimmer and dimmer by outside forces, and programming which causes a great closure of connection to self, and spirit. We can build it back up again by doing things like grounding, smiling and laughing,” Molly said.

“If you are connected to the Universe, you are living in alignment to your highest good.”

Reflections

After speaking to these three women, it is clear that they are all experiencing personal benefits from engaging with the Spirit World.

When we examine the beliefs involved in subscribing to the Spirit World and the benefits that those who do report, what we are left with sounds like something of a utopia. Eternal self-forgiveness, authenticity, multiple chances at life and unconditional love.

Not only do these sound like some of the values many of the world’s organised religions strive for, but in reality, they are things all humans desire.

Whether you believe in the Spirit World, or the healing power of crystals and manifestation or not,  it appears that those who do are cultivating deep reserves of inner-peace, contentment and light.
